Flow Form Spatula
Hand-crafted spatula cut from a block of modeling foam and ash wood. A study in flowforms, function, ergonomics, affordances, aesthetics, and an exercise in craft.

Flow Form Studies

Form Development

Iterations
I wanted to push the boundaries of what a typical spatula looks like. I began to settle on a simplified, geometric sillhoutte that juxtaposes from the organic "twist" that joins the blade to the handle. This also worked ergonomically, as it allowed the user to place their thumb on the twist.

Fabrication
Using the bandsaw, I made two cuts on the 10x3 plane from the top and side plane. From here, I used the belt sander, oscillating spindle sander, rasps, and various grits of sandpaper to shape and smooth the form.
